HOW IT GOT STARTED
The team is founded by two student associations: CenEka (Yarne De Munck and Costas Barrientos Rojas) and Pkarus (Mauro Daese and Zeno Zobel). The student associations gathered forces and started the team in November 2020 during strict covid regulations. Despite the regulations, the students managed to enthousiasm many students. The first infosession was a tremendous success and a perfect start for the team.
FORMULA STUDENT
THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS ENGINEERING COMPETITION WORLDWIDE
The Formula Student competitions are a series of engineering competitions held annually in various European countries like Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Italy. University students from all over the world show and race the car they developed over the past year. There are three different kind of competitions: combustion, electric and driverless. With UGent Racing, we focus on the electric and driverless cup. The competition is not won solely by the team with the fastest car, but rather by the team with the best overall package of construction, performance, and financial and sales planning. The decision is made by a jury of experts from the motorsport, automotive and supplier industries. They will judge every team's car and sales plan based on construction, cost planning and sales presentation. Additional judging will be done on the track, where the team demonstrate how well their self-built race cars fare in their true environment.
STATIC VS DYNAMIC EVENTS
DRIVE FAST, THINK SMART
The competition consists of eight events in total. Four of them are called static events, meaning that the car will not be driven for these events. They are aimed towards explaining the idea behind the designs and management of the team. Here, we have Business Plan, Efficiency, Cost & Manufacturing and Engineering Design. Several presentations are held to give the judges the full story and philosophy behind the car.
For the dynamic events, the car is put to the test. During Acceleration the car has to drive in a straight line for a fixed distance as fast as possible. Skid Pad requires the car to drive along a wet figure 8 track. For Autocross the autonomous system has to guide the car as fast as possible through an unknown parkour and Trackdrive has the car complete 10 laps of the same track.
